Ancient Art of Paper Quilling with Marcy Kaplan, Thursday, July 10, 2025, 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Glastonbury Arts
Discover the intricate beauty of paper quilling, an art form that dates back to the Renaissance and beyond. In this presentation, we will explore the rich history of quilling, from its origins to its evolution as a beloved decorative art form. Learn about the tools for quilling, as well as about the beautiful paper used to create this ancient art. Enjoy a demonstration and celebrate this timeless and meditative activity.
Marcy Kaplan of Serial Quiller Creations located in New London, Connecticut is by trade a licensed social worker of more than 25 years. An art enthusiast since childhood, she found paper quilling and fell in love with the art form. Marcy offers classes, private lessons, home parties, and custom artwork. You can see her work in the gift store at the Slater Memorial Museum at Norwich Free Academy.
Sustainable Terrarium Artistry with Kerin Smollen, Thursday, August 14, 2025, 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Glastonbury Arts
Learn the art and science of building your own miniature ecosystem! In this terrarium talk, you'll learn how to create, care for, and customize your own self-contained green world—perfect for home, school, or gifts. “My goal is to provide a space where people can experience the beauty and joy of flowers and plants in a way that’s both personal and sustainable,” says Kerin Smollen.
Kerin Smollen, entrepreneur and floral designer, bring 25 years of design experience from the renowned Flower School NYC. Smollen, whose resume includes floral design for the White House as well as innovation experience at LEGO and Disney, brings unparalleled expertise to her new Glastonbury venture Flower & Twine.

PAINTING WATER IN PASTEL, Tuesday & Wednesday, July 15 & 16, 9:30 am - 4:00 pm both days
This comprehensive workshop will cover the techniques for capturing the translucency, reflections, and movement of water. Day 1 will focus on painting still water and its reflections and on Day 2, the concentration will shift to moving water. Students should bring a variety of their own photo references, not a calendar or internet photo. Please have the photo references printed in color and grey scale. Karen will be happy to share her references.
